Yves Pons named SEC defensive player of the year

Recommended Posts

For Rick Barnes, there’s no doubt about where Yves Pons stands among defenders in the Southeastern Conference.

“Obviously,” Barnes said on Monday, “I think he’s the defensive player of the year.”

On Tuesday, Pons was named the SEC's Defensive Player of the Year. He was joined no the SEC's All-Defensive Team by Herbert Jones (Alabama), Isaac Okoro(Auburn), Ashton Hagans (Kentucky), Nick Richards (Kentucky).

Well deserved. There's no telling how many points Pons has denied opponents this year with his blocks and that's just one of many skills he brings to the court.

What's so impressive to me about his shot blocking ability is that he's able to do it most of the time without fouling, even under the rim. To be that physical and still be disciplined is what makes him special.
