COLLEGE STATION, Texas (WVLT) -- COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — Top-ranked Tennessee didn’t take much time to celebrate breaking a 100-year old school record.

Tennessee's current 16-game winning streak is the longest in school history. The Vols also have the longest current winning streak in the country among division one teams.

This team has much bigger goals.

Grant Williams scored 22 points to help the Volunteers beat Texas A&M 93-76 on Saturday night and with their 16th straight game, setting a new school mark.

“We have a long way to go,” Williams said. “We have a long season ahead of us. It’s nice to set that record but we want more. We can’t ever settle because if we settle or we start thinking that’s all we want we’re going to drop to teams left and right.”

The Volunteers (20-1, 8-0 Southeastern Conference) surpassed the 15-game streak they had from February 1915 to January 1917 and are off to their best start in conference play since also going 8-0 in 1981-82.

Tennessee was clinging to a two-point lead midway through the second half before a 5-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Jordan Bowden, made it 70-63. Those five points were the start of a 10-3 spurt, with a 3 from Lamonte Turner that extended the lead to 75-66 with 8 1/2 minutes to go. Williams added a dunk in that stretch and had a big defensive play with a block on TJ Starks.

Fantastic, congrats to the Vols.

But if they don't stop squatting on early leads, one day somebody's going to make them have regret.

Totally agree. There is kinks. Still I would run the offense through Bone.

He's special. Then when teams lock him down open it up to Williams and Schofield. This team can be special. Rick Barnes is the best Coach to keep them level headed.

The Vols won by 17 but the game seemed more like a grind most of the way. A&M gave it everything they had, give 'em credit. And those damn announcers must have noted Tennessee being #1 about a thousand times just in case everyone had forgot.

The SEC is really strong this year, top to bottom. Rarely does one team dominate from start to finish like the Vols did against Georgia. Even the best teams can have lapses and the worst teams can go on runs during the course of a game. Kentucky was down double digits to Florida Saturday before making a big comeback. It doesn't bother me so much that they let lesser teams give them a battle. What impresses me is that they don't panic when things get tight. Barnes has been around enough to know when to call a TO  to get them re-focused and when to let them work it out on the court. And Bone has really developed into a steadying influence with his ball handling and shooting no doubt.

Still some tough games on the schedule. They may lose a game or two before the conference season is over. They may split with Kentucky. But at this point they're playing for seeding come tourney time. They'll be fine.

Yep it is frustrating to see teams not known for their 3 point shooting (A&M, West Virginia, South Carolina) start draining them against the Vols.

Mizzou is one of the better 3 point shooting teams in the SEC. So work on that perimeter defense guys!

BTW, this will be Cuonzo's first visit to TBA since he left Tennessee. Remember all those sportswriters and "experts" who said the Vols were making a huge mistake letting him go?

It is time to show a lot of class and give Cuonzo a Big Orange welcome.  Plus we need to win lol
