Rick Barnes didn’t hesitate to shatter the starting lineup he has employed for the past year-plus of Tennessee basketball games on Wednesday.

And Yves Pons wasted no time in proving why Barnes opted for the freaky athletic forward.

The sophomore raced to the hoop for an offensive rebound on UT’s first possession, ducked to the wing and buried a 3-pointer. But it was hardly the big moment for Pons, who is a highlight waiting to happen whenever he steps on the court.

Pons soared for a two-handed, volleyball block later in the first half. He smoothly ran down the floor and skied for a huge alley-oop from Jordan Bone, then did the same in the second half.

“Honestly, with Yves, we feel like with his bounce there is no limit," Bone said. "When he makes plays like that, we are like, 'We knew he was going to make that play.' To see him jump that high is very shocking.”

The No. 7 Vols rolled past Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, a large first-half run lifting Tennessee to a 95-67 win with Pons playing his biggest role in his UT career.

Grant Williams led the Vols (5-1) with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Admiral Schofield scored 20 and was 8 of 9 from the field.

Pons, who started over Jordan Bowden, had a career-high 10 points. He topped his career-best seven points by the end of the first half against EKU (3-4).

PONS SHOULD PLAY FOOTBALL. That kid is a beast. He should try out for TE. :ohyeah:

Good solid shooter and rebounder. When you have guys like Pons who can come off the bench and/or start that's what they call depth. Turner, on the other hand, is really scuffling.

Yeah Turner needs a few games to get the rust off. He definitely is having some issues. If he gets going though with Pons stepping up then watch out.

I think Bone is one of Keys not mentioned enough. I like when he is on his game. He has an aggressive streak in him
