Vols look unprepared in OT win over App State 20-13

The Volunteers survived a significant scare from Appalachian State on Thursday, recovering from a sluggish start and 13-3 deficit to win 20-13 in overtime. A late rally and some big plays in overtime helped the ninth-ranked Vols (1-0, 0-0 SEC) escape with a win over the Mountaineers (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt), who nearly pulled off their second major upset of a highly-ranked team in a decade after stunning fourth-ranked Michigan nine years ago to the day in 2007.The Vols looked sluggish and did not seem to get on track until the 4th quarter where Josh Malone stepped up with some big catches on the stretch. Dobbs seems to have regressed instead of impressed last night. Throwing passes into coverage and making some very strange decisions with the ball. Hats off the App. State. They came to play.

While this is not a loss, it would seem a lot needs to be improved on and quickly with the Battle of Bristol coming next weekend. Luckily the Vols will have a few extra days with this game played on Thursday and Va Tech isn't until next Saturday.

There is much to be worked on. What do you all think out there? What would you grade the performance? I say a D. Sometimes is win isn't a win. This one feels like that to me a little. Still they can improve and there is much to improve on. Biggest improvement can be from your first and second games. The Vols better get to work..

Thoughts?

I'd give it a D also, and that's only because the managed to win. Cam Sutton said he was impressed by the Vols overcoming adversity but what's the glory in that if much of their adversity was self inflicted?

Vols were outplayed and also outcoached. DeBord must've been feeling like Deja Vu all over again. Dobbs passing was a big disappointment. The line play on both sides of the ball was a big disappointment. There's not a single part of the game that doesn't need improvement. Well, maybe the kicking game was ok.

The one thing I will say about Sutton is this. He knew he made a mistake and winners come back and correct it. That INT he had was a one of the few bright spots i saw in the game. I hate to beat up on Dobbs and wow is all I can say. He regressed. A lot in social media are saying the line was at fault and somewhat I can agree but the offensive line did not throw that bone headed INT or almost fumble away the game in OT on that run into the endzone.

I have let it settle in and evaluated it again. Much to work on folks and no this was not a great team that Tennessee beat barely. Good yes. Great no. Some were comparing this to the 98 win at Syracuse. I am sorry but App State has no Donovan McNabbs, Dwight Freeneys or Qadry Ismail's on that team. They are good but this was obviously a team that should have been beaten much more than what we saw in the performance. Look I am all about it being a win and I am thankful more than anything it was a win. Still we need to take a step back and not be biased. If Florida had played them and played like that last night we as Vol fans would all be saying how bad they played and how the Vols will kill them. So come on let's be honest here. Still a win is a win. Time to see what can get fixed this next few days and look forward to Bristol.

App St scored zero points after the 2nd qtr. Once the Vols defense figured out what they were doing the stops came. It was a good adjustment, and won the game for us.

You got to win the ugly games too, and this game was certainly one of those.

I have calmed a little as the day has gone by. Yes the defense played better. I still am so worried about what I saw from the offensive line and QB position. Hey we cannot blame Medley this week.  :govolsbaby:

I have not calmed down, if anything I have gotten more irritated. "unprepared" was and "UNDERSTATEMENT". We looked horrible and I fear it could get worse with the largest football game ever just a week away.

True, but none of us were thinking the ugly game would come this soon.

Usually an overtime is an indication that the two teams playing were (overall) very evenly matched. I don't think anyone can really argue that, of course "Usually" does not mean "Always", but who would have ever bet on an overtime win in this game? I'd love to see what kind of odds were given on that!

The Tennessee coaching staff was just hiding their gamelan wishful thinkers are already out in full force. Just saying that's a reach this year.

"I try to do things 100 percent right all the time, and I don't think I did that today, A win's a win, we're OK with it, but we have a lot of things we have to fix up.."

No, that's not a Vol talking. That's the 12th ranked Michigan State QB Tyler O'Connor after they had more trouble than expected against Furman yesterday.

So the Vols aren't the only ones saying a win's a win. There will probably be more after this weekend.

In the FPI UT fell from #5 to #6, while AppSt moved up from #68 to #55.

Hmmm, we're right behind Alabama...

Well, won't make much difference if your hiding the same gameplan you've used for 3 years (offensively anyways)

Guys, calm down lol. This is the same team that destroyed Northwestern just a few months ago. I believe they played extreme vanilla this game and only opened the playbook a little in the 4th to save the game.....it happens.

This App State team had the 6th best rushing game in college football last year, the 14th best defense and was #1 in red zone scoring defense....all higher ranking than Tennessee last year.

Was this Syracuse of 1998? No. I'm gonna say this App State team would have played them just as tough if not beat them. I don't think they will lose another game all year. Mark my words, we will be watching Marcus Cox in the NFL soon.

I believe we will see a completely different team next week against Virginia Tech. If not, THEN I'll start scratching my head. Think about it for a second. How many times dis you see Kamara and Hurd both in the backfield? How many times did Dobbs run the ball? How many times did Kamara run the ball....6? That wasn't Tennessee football. Why show your hand on the first game and give Bud Foster, one of the all-time defensive masterminds of college football, a full plate to pick apart? Was it a gutsy call against a really talented Appalachian State team? You bet it was, but again I say this is the same offense that went toe to toe with half of the playoff teams from last year.

Rest easy Vol friends. We haven't seen anything yet.

That argument swings both ways. This is not the same app state team from last year. They had some turnover and yes last year's team was good but also lost to Arkansas state at home and got blown out by Clemson. So I guess we can all turn app state into whatever we want to fit our opinion. And before anyone says but Clemson played in the playoff. Ok how far of a disparity do you think there should be from number 9 to number 2 in the nation?

No one's knocking the team but the hype should have never been there. My biggest fear became a reality. They did not perform like a top 10 team. The rank was way too high to begin with

I hope you're right MV! Our offense has always been vanilla and will have trouble with VT's Bud Foster defense. Hopefully this was just a "shake off the cobwebs" but I am worried about living more years having to listen to Hokie fans!

Noone was injured in the game, the playbook wasn't opened, and we closed out a game at the end. Much more than we could say last year. Yes, it was an ugly win but I'll take it.

We tried to close out the game, if it wasn't for the App State kicker, we'd be looking at a loss right now.

Well, luck was certainly on our side. Either that or the OT Dobbs run/fumble to Hurd in the EZ call was brilliant...

Lol yeah exactly.
I love MV's optimism and firmly believe that we did indeed keep the playbook close to our hip. But, while not showing the rest of the country what we CAN accomplish with a full playbook, we showed the opposition exactly how to stop Hurd, Kamara, and Dobbs.

The game score predictions DID NOT indicate, many thought AppSt would almost make up post an "L", but after the game......., too bad one can't get paid for post game bets......

Sorry guys....  Not buying the defense getting better in the second half idea.  They couldnt even stop APP State from marching down field at the end of the 4th quarter and allowed them to get a good look at a field goal attempt that they missed.  Also in OT App State moved the ball with ease on them.  Perhaps the new system is not second nature to the defense but had this been a quality SEC team we would have gotten stomped.  We really need to "Study film and work like heck"!

Ahhhhhhh work like heck... LOL

Ok my take a couple of days after the game. In the first half we were outplayed!!!!!! We are forgetting App State is a good football team and they came in ready to play and with a decent plan that they were able to execute. Do I chalk this up to first game jitters, believing the preseason hype or just poor play. So here are my thoughts on it:

1. I am of the opinion that the defense kept us in the game.  Not sure if they fully grasp all of the defensive concepts yet.

2. I know a lot of you will say out coached. Sorry, I don't buy into that. Yes, the coaches make the game plan and make adjustments during the game but it is up to the players to execute said plan.

3. The thing that bothers me the most right now is the offensive line play. Okay,I know there are some injuries and guys playing out of position. I understand that. Do I think these issues will be resolved, yes I do. I think this was the cause of a lot of the running game problems.

4. Quarterback play also bothers me at this point. Simply put, Dobbs didn't play that well something else I feel can be corrected.

5. Thursday in the shout box I said something about the officials. Here it is , the targeting call could have gone either way, the play that was reversed after a play had been run was wrong! The dropped touchdown call , that was pretty much correct.

These are just some things I'll touch on right now I feel a lot of this is correctable  and judging by some of the scores this Saturday I am pretty sure that will happen.
